SPX wins $35m contract to supply condenser to Israeli gas-fired CCPP

SPX Corporation’s Thermal Equipment and Services sector has won a contract worth $35 million to supply an air-cooled condenser (ACC) for Dalia Power Energies’ new 835MW gas-fired combined cycle power plant (CCPP) which will be built in the Tel Tzafit region in Israel. The contract was awarded by Alstom – the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the plant.

The Tzafit plant is expected to be commissioned in 2014 and will feature two 417MW gas-fired combined-cycle units.

The construction of the plant was made possible by Israel’s Electricity Utilities Law which was passed to open up the power generation market to private producers. Upon commissioning, the new plant is expected to be one of the Israel’s largest private producers of electricity, supplying an estimated 6 percent of the country’s total energy needs, according to Dalia Power Energies.

The Israeli government intends to have 20 percent of the country’s energy production coming from private companies by 2020.

Electricity consumption in Israel is also expected to double in the next 20 years, according to Israel’s Ministry of Energy and Water Resources.

The Tzafit plant, located near the intersection of the country’s energy grid, is expected to provide electricity to both the northern and southern sections of the grid. The ACC provided by SPX will allow for the elimination of water usage from the condensing power cycle, SPX said.
